Please start at 1/2 the dose for one week, then increase to the full dose if tolerating well thereafter. Please avoid Cod liver oil and flax seed as well as products with xylitol, Vit A, and/or D. We recommend Nordic Naturals or Welactin brands. Continue heartworm and flea/tick preventives as prescribed by Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital. Additional Recommendations Please see our website www.cvcavets.com for more information about dilated cardiomyopathy. Pearl was noted to have a ventricular arrhythmia. Ventricular arrhythmias are abnormal electrical impulses originating from the bottom chambers (ventricles) of the heart. In the absence of significant heart disease these arrhythmias can be secondary to any number of systemic diseases, however they can be the first sign of developing DCM. In an older dog, I would also consider further diagnostics, such as abdominal ultrasound, chest x-rays, complete blood work with urinalysis, and tick titers to determine if there is a cause for the ventricular arrhythmia. We also discussed that in light of the lump in her mammary chain, I would start by having your primary care take a look at the mass and potentially sample it, as this could explain her arrhythmia.
